Leporello “Parallel Vienna” was created as both a product of and a reflection on my VIENNA COMIX WEEK residency.

NINI’S NOTE ABOUT LEPORELLO PARALLEL VIENNA
With this work, I don’t want to create a tourist’s diary of Vienna. I’m more interested in its psychogeography – the way the city affects perception, memory, and imagination. That’s why the city isn’t the subject of this comic; the city is its main character.
The micro-comix is not read as a series of illustrations, but as a single Dadaist walk through a “parallel Vienna.”
The texts don’t explain the images; instead, they destabilize them, open up new meanings, and leave room for interpretation. It was important to me that the entire work function as a single, unified piece, not as a collection of individual illustrations. I tried to build the rhythm and logic of a dream that gradually introduces the reader to a parallel version of the city.
The black strips with white text give the entire publication a visual rhythm and connect different techniques into a unique language. They hold the sequence together and turn it into a microstrip, not a portfolio of works. The poetic text builds a gradual, dreamlike escalation. Sentences like “The city folded itself to fit into a pocket” or “The river forgot where it was flowing” emerge as small shifts in reality, without needing explanation.
I intentionally combine marker, collage, glitch, sticker, monochrome drawing, and other various graphic techniques to create a sense of passing through different layers of the city. The contrast between figuration and abstraction keeps the viewer’s gaze alert throughout all ten frames.

The first five shots introduce the city, while the other five gradually dissolve it into a dream. There is a dramaturgy, but without classical narration. The texts are short, sound like found sentences, and do not try to be witty. They prefer to open up space rather than offer answers.
The following shots are particularly important to me: TODAY, THE WINDOWS DECIDED TO DREAM. / THE CITY FOLDED ITSELF TO FIT INTO A POCKET. / THE RIVER FORGOT WHERE IT WAS FLOWING.
What I’m most excited about is that after the last panel, I have the feeling the story can be read again from the beginning. This circular flow was more important to me than linear storytelling and suits the leporello format. I would love for each new pass through the comic to open up another, different walk through my parallel Vienna.

Ten days of VCW art residency – A period full of top releases, exhibitions, debates and live music performances! Alongside my solo exhibition, we also hosted the Komikaze tour, featuring eight tables packed with independent comics and zines.
